Why is Vetmedin always out of stock?
Heidi De wit-Sommerfeld, a representative for Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health (the producer of the drug), explained that production is stalled due to an issue at their manufacturing site in Mexico. It stems from a paperwork backlog with the agency responsible for regulating food safety, pharmaceutical drugs, medical devices and environmental protection. The issue will be resolved after they get through their paperwork compliance. She assures that “this is not a capacity or quality issue” and that “our paperwork is filed. We are working hard and waiting for a response from the authorities.” Boehringer Ingelheim will be rationing the drug due to this stall in production, officials say.
Is there a substitute for pimobendane (the active ingredient in vetmedin)?
Unfortunately not. Some drugs like dopamine and dobutamine are also potent positive inotropes but they can only be given for a short time intravenously.

Vetmedin Side Effects
Pets with hypertrophic cardiomyophaty, aortic stensosis should not take vetmedin. Also, dogs under 6 months of age should not take the drug as well as any pet that has had an allergic reaction to pimobendane or like products.
Vetmedin may also increase the development of arrhythmia.
