Janus cat: Cat born with two faces in Oregon

Kyla and Bj King, a family living in Portland, Oregon, woke up to quite the surprise on Wednesday morning. Their pregnant cat had birthed a litter of new cats overnight, and Kyla went into the crate to see the newborn kittens. To her surprise, she found a kitten with two faces. Yes, you read that correctly. The King’s cat had given birth to a Janus Cat.

What is a Janus Cat

A Janus cat refers to a cat that is born with two faces. While Janus cat’s have two faces, they usually share the same brain. A Janus cat can have 2, 3, or 4 eyes. Biscuits and Gravy, the name that the Kings gave to their cat, has 3-4 eyes. They are not yet sure if the eye in the middle is one eye or if it is separated. They will find out in a week when the kitten should open its eyes.

How long do Janus Cats live?

Unfortunately, the majority of Janus Cats (cats with two faces) die before reaching the age of 1 week. While the King’s are aware of the low chance of survival, they are doing all they can to care for the cat. Kyla king sleeps with the cat in her shirt to make sure it stays warm. BJ King stated in an interview that the cat still has an appetite and is acting very lively. He says that he was a bit confused the first time he saw the cat eat out of one mouth and meow out of the other at the same time.

The record for the longest living Janus cat was set by Frank and Louie. This cat from Massachusetts set the Guniess World Record for the longest living two faced cat at the age of 15 years old.

How rare are Janus cats?

Janus cats are caused by an unknown genetic trait that causes the cat to have to faces. Janus cats are very rare, and there are less than 100 Janus cats in the world.
