If you are an adult , parents’ approval to bring a cat should not be mandatory. But, if you live in the same house with your parents or are not an adult (the main reason), their permission may be needed. In most cases, they may be reluctant to do so, especially if they are not pet lovers.
Sometimes they may be reluctant even though they love cats, as there may exist many logical reasons behind their reluctance, such as not being able to give enough time to cats, avoiding uncleanliness, or fear of any disease transmission from animals. Don’t forget – dealing with a pet is not easy as you think! But you can still convince them quickly with some infallible techniques.
But we have a disclaimer before you read and apply the techniques: We can not guarantee that your parents will be convinced if they have already known these tips and realize you are applying the same things! 😉
Lol… Don’t worry, it’s not that serious. If you try, they will feel for you and probably get convinced shortly.
How to Convince Your Parents to Get a Cat
Ask for a Baby Brother/Sister
“The best way to get a puppy is to beg for a baby brother — and they’ll settle for a puppy every time.” – Winston Pendleton.
Believe it or not, Winston Pendleton’s words will come true in maximum cases! But this should not be your only way to approach, as there are some other technically sound methods. You can explain those to your parents when you directly ask for getting a cat.
What are those?
Simple- find out the grounds for why they may disapprove of your appeal of bringing a pet at home! And then try to figure out solutions to the potential grounds that your parents see as problems or barriers against bringing a dog or cat at home. The grounds include food, extra expense, additional time, extra work, disruption of regular schedules, and possible destruction or uncleanliness of furniture and home appliances.
Get ready with your answers! Probably, the following discussions might help you in this regard.
Set Up a Routine
Whether it’s a kitty or an adult cat, you have to spend a certain amount of time on it. Feeding them, exercising, training them, taking them for walks, and defecating is no less altogether! So, create a daily routine of when and how you will do those! It should be in harmony with your other daily activities, such as eating, sleeping, and studying. Not that the routine has to be perfect. Instead, you should throw a message to your parents that you are not going to be harmed by your cats.
Do Something that Proves You Can Take Responsibility
Setting up a routine may not be enough to convince your mom, papa, or even both! What you can do is start to do something that helps them understand that you are now ready to take some additional responsibilities and make no mess. For instance, doing some household chores like washing your food dishes, making your bed prepared before sleep, cleaning your rooms, etc.
Consider Your Accommodation
Your parents may deny bringing a cat on the ground that you are living in an apartment which is not large enough to accommodate a cat. It is, of course, a very valid reason. But if you still want a pet, you should do some research about those cats who are small and easy to accommodate. If you can find a perfect-match breed to your apartment size, and explain that to your parents well, probably they will consider it positively.
Help Your Parents at Bearing Expenses
If you’re in Grade School (5-12 years of age), it is not possible anyway that you can help them at bearing the expenses arising out of having a pet. In that case, you just can explain to parents that you are ready to take on some extra responsibilities that start when you take a pet at home. But if you fall in Teen stage (12-18 years of age), you should try to help them at bearing expenses by saving your birthday money, or getting a part-time job.
Show Concern about Your Parents Condition
It could be that for some reason, your parents have a mental fear of a particular cat! They may be are allergic to pets. You have to consider these matters! In such a situation, you can choose an animal that they are not afraid of, or suggest an allergy-free species. Perhaps this is how they will be convinced.
Tell Them about Benefits of Having a Cat
The last thing you should do is try to explain your perceptions about the benefits of pets to your parents. It’s not that they don’t know about it at all. However, they may learn something new from your explanation or may think anew about something they already know. Through this process, you can actually instill positivity about pets in them.
Last Words
Whatever you do and say to your parents, be very positive and confident. Show your eagerness and capacity to take responsibility. Consider their problems, and be very apathetic to those. Do not be stubborn. Explain them respectfully with logic, and you can expect they will happily allow you to bring your favorite cat at home.
