Best Way to get Cat Litter out of Carpet

best way to get cat litter out of carpet

Being an owner of a feline requires a lot of patience and also cleaning talent. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for your cat’s litter to end up all throughout your house. Sometimes, the litter can get stuck in their paws, and other times your cat might just kick it around on purpose.

One of the most annoying places that cat litter can spread is into carpet. Cats enjoy carpets because they are easily accessible; however, littering on them can produce an unpleasant odor and be hard to clean.

It is best to clean the cat litter as soon as possible before it soaks in the carpet. The following are some helpful steps to get cat litter out of a carpet.

Best way to get cat litter out of carpet?

The best way to get cat litter out of a carpet is to use a paper towel, vacuum, and then disinfect the area.

Step 1: Use a Paper Towel

Grab a paper towel and see if you can collect the litter with it. I suggest putting on some gloves in case the cat litter already has some waste soaked in it. You should be able to grab most of the litter with the paper towel, but you might need to dampen the paper towel to help the litter stick to it. A kitchen towel or sponge can be used as a substitute, but it should be noted that the smell can be difficult to remove from these objects.

Step 2: Wait for the spot to dry

If the carpet is now wet, you should wait until it is dry until you continue to the next stop. To help speed up the process, you can put a fan in the area. This will also help with air circulation and odor.

Step 3: Use a vacuum

Once the area is dry, I recommend you run a vacuum over the area. This will help collect any of the remaining pieces of litter.

Step 4: Disinfect the area

The final step is to use an air freshener or an odor neutralizer to disinfect the area. This is very important because if the litter had cat urine or poop on it, the odor can still stick to the couch. Urine cannot be removed simply by scrubbing or vacuuming the area.  Utilize your preferred air freshener or odor neutralizer to prevent any unpleasant smell. This will save your carpet from having a lingering smell.

If your cat is urinating in the house all of a sudden, you should take him/her to the vet. There is a chance that your cat has a UTI or some other infection.

How to prevent cat from peeing on the carpet

To avoid these issues, it is also critical to train your feline to defecate inside their litter box. They, too, must go through potty training, just like babies. Remember to start training your cat as soon as possible.

Aside from training your cats, it is important to evaluate other aspects of their litter situation. If your cat has a tendency to pee on the carpet, try changing up the location of its litter box. Place the litter box away from the carpet. For example, you can place it under the stairs or near the door exit.

It is also important that you regularly clean your cat’s litter box. If the litter box is dirty, it can stress out your cat and cause your cat to poop in the house all of a sudden.

You can also add obstacles to the carpet that can help prevent your cat from littering in that area. Some barriers you can use to keep your cat safe include

(1) draping aluminum foil over the area

(2) spraying it with a kitty-safe repellent. Installing different litter boxes around the house can also help train your cat to pee or poop in the boxes instead of the carpet.
