Why do cows wear bells?
Cows around the world, and not just in Switzerland, commonly wear bells so that the herdsman can track them down. They are especially common in large terrains where the cow has a lot of roaming area. It is very common for the Swiss to put bells on their cows?
Why do the Swiss Put Bells on their Cows?
The Swiss always put bells on their cows because the terrain in Switzerland is very hilly and oftentimes filled with brushes or big rocks. This terrain makes it very easy for a cow to wander off away from the other cows and out of sight from the herdsman. Also, the hilly regions of the Alps in Switzerland frequently are covered in fog, making visibility very low up in the mountains. Therefore, the swiss put bells around the necks of the cows so that they can hear when the cow is wandering off so they can go track it down.
Additionally, bells are very symbolic in Swiss culture. They are frequently used as ceremonies, weddings, and at sporting matches. Sometimes, herdsman will decorate the leather strap that attaches the bell to the cow’s neck.
Are cow bells immoral?
Some animal rights activists have claimed that bells should be outlawed because they cause stress in the cow and present a health risk. There have been studies exploring the impact of cows wearing bells around their neck. While the studies found that cow’s that wore bells around their neck were less active, there were not any significant health risk posed by wearing a bell.
