Pros and cons of neutering a dog

Pros and cons of neutering a dog

As a dog owner, one of the biggest decisions you will have to make in regards to your puppy is neutering. It is very important that you approach this decision responsibly and with all of the facts. At the end of the day, it is your decision to make.

What is dog neutering?

Neturing is a surgery in which the vet makes an incision in your dogs scrotum and removes the dog’s testes. It is done under general anesthesia.

Pros and cons of neutering a dog

Pros of neutering a dog include:

Unwanted puppies: this is the most obvious pro of neutering a dog. If your dog is neutered, it cannot get female dogs pregnant.

Protect from certain diseases: neutering reduces the chances that your dog will develop testicular or prostate cancer

Roaming: A dog that is neutered is less likely to roam around or run away to try to find a female partner

Cons of neutering a dog:

Weight: some research shows unneutered dogs burn fat faster than neutered dogs

Complication from neutering: Although they are almost always minor, around 1/5 of neutering procedures result in some sort of complication. Usually these are infection, swelling, or adverse response to anesthesia. This is why it is very important to care for you dog and watch him/her closely for the next 3 weeks following the surgery.

Uncontrolled bladder: This is not common, but a possible con of neutering your dog is an uncrontrolled bladder.

Dog neuter recovery time

Usually, the dog neuter recovery time is around 10 days. The first 24 hours following the procedure are the most important. During this period, you should keep your dog in a warm and dry area, and don’t let him do any physical activity. After this first day, you should limit your dogs activity, and only allow walking (no running). You should also check the incision daily.

How soon can I walk my dog after neutering?

You can walk your dog 1-2 days after neutering. These should be short walks and we recommend not travelling too far. We recommend just walking your dog around your property, as it might be inclined to chase a squirrel or run around with another dog if it appears.
