How do bees kill Killer Hornets?
Bees kill killer hornets by cooking them alive. As crazy as it sounds, the only way that a group of bees can kill an Asian Murder Hornet is by crowding around it to increase its body temperature. The reason bees can kill murder hornets by roasting them is because bees can withstand a temperature of 117 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas an Asian giant hornet can only withstand 115 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, it takes thousands of bees to attack a killer hornet in order to kill it. Because of the amount of bees required to kill an Asian Killer Hornet, a beehive doesn’t stand a chance against a group of killer hornets. This is why Killer Hornets will usually attack beehives in groups.
Japanese Bees vs Asian Killer Hornets
Japanese honey bees are the best defenders against Asian killer hornets. They have evolved over thousands of years in order to team up against murder hornets. The key to their defense is communication. It is very important that they all attack at once so that the Asian Killer Hornet is overwhelmed and doesn’t have a chance to escape. If the giant Asian Murder Hornet is able to escape, it means death for the bees. This is because the murder hornet will quickly return with other hornets from their colony and devastate the entire beehive.
American bees vs. Asian Giant Murder Hornets
Since Asian giant murder hornets are not native to North America, American honey bees have not evolved a defense against the murder hornets. This may turn out to be very problematic, because recently Asian Giant Murder Hornets were discovered an Washington State. If U.S honeybees are not able to evolve to defend themselves, it can have a huge impact on U.S grown agriculture.
