Is Cat Litter Radioactive?

is cat litter radioactive

Now that we know kitty litter is radioactive, what does this mean for you and your cat’s health?

Fortunately, the quantity of radiation in cat litter is so minuscule that it poses no health risks for humans or your furry friend. You should not be concerned with the small traces of radioactive isotopes. Unfortunately this means it won’t fly as an excuse to make someone else take out the litter box! That said, the cat litter box should be avoided if you are pregnant. This is not due to cat litter’s radioactive properties, but rather due to cat feces. Cat feces has been known to carry a parasitic infection called toxoplasmosis. The parasite is transmitted orally, so simply brushing a contaminated body part to your mouth could transmit the infection. If transmitted, the parasite can cause flu-like symptoms and cause serious birth defects. You should know that Tofu cat litter is not radioactive.

How to change cat litter safely

Although the radiation is not dangerous, cat poop can contain many different bacteria and diseases. We recommend using a scooper that is metal and has non stick capabilities. We really like this non-stick aluminum scooper that can be purchased on Amazon for only $12.

How to safely change the cat litter while pregnant:

If you would still prefer cat litter that doesn’t contain bentonite clay, there are plenty of options! Some of our favorites include:
